Leveraging the Power of the Interpretive Mode
The interpretive mode is a foundational building block for language acquisition. Comprehension via listening and reading is essential and inextricably linked to success in speaking and writing for all learners. In this session, teachers will learn to leverage the power of the interpretive mode, using techniques for reading and storytelling, to promote language acquisition and move students along the proficiency scale.
During this session, teachers will discover the importance of the interpretive mode in laying a foundation for language acquisition. Teachers will learn how to develop and use stories along with a powerful questioning technique that provides the repetition necessary for acquiring language. Teachers will learn how to utilize various reading strategies and resources to build skills in interpreting written language. I will provide a vibrant presentation with relevant examples and anecdotes.
Dr. Kindt will offer rationale and examples of "ready for Monday" interpretive mode strategies that can be used and/or adapted for various levels of language proficiency. I will encourage teacher interaction and collaboration through facilitated discussion and peer demonstrations. As reading and listening skills are essential for student success on the AP exam, the goal for some WL programs, it is essential that these skills be addressed at the onset of language learning. Unfortunately, many textbooks do not include reading, in particular, as an essential part of their scope and sequence. Reading and listening, the key tenets of the interpretive mode, have the power to launch student success in the target language. This session will encourage teachers to leverage the power of the interpretive mode to move students along the proficiency scale.
